Customer Reviews:

  • Great g card but Customer Services drops the ball
Well, I purchased my card (WPC54GS) and the router to match (WRT54GS) last Sunday for my work computer and after a week I finally got it to work no thanks to customer service at Linksys. There only help was to tell me the card was broken and I had to reinstall my operating system after 4 hours on the phone with them trying the same thing over and over again. But I'm sure that if you have windows XP or 2000 you wont have any problems but, my company gave me a great laptop but with windows 98SE which for those of you who have moved on to XP as I did with my home PC remember what a piece it was. If any of you purchase this card with 98SE and get stuck you can e-mail me at GEO1277@comcast.net and I can help you get it up and running. But as far as the product goes it gets great reception and as long as one of the antennas is pointed in the direction you are using the laptop or pc you can go through 3 well built floors and at least 100ft that I know of from my experience. Oh one more down side to this card if you have Windows 98SE you can't use the SpeedBooster unless you are using XP or 2000 just some info that I think was left out on this website but will be on the box when you get the card or router. I would give the Router 5 stars the Card 4 Stars and the customer service negative 5 stars....more info
  • Great Product
This was easy to set-up and use. It receives the signal from the router in all the rooms in my house....more info
  • Upgraded to solve security issue.
I decided to upgrade my laptop with the wpc54gs from the wpc54g. I did this because the "g" card would randomly disconnect when the WEP or WPA security was activated. Living in a home near about 6 other networks I really wanted the router and wireless network secured. So, I purchased this card to see if it would fix my problem. I can happily say it solved the random disconnect with WPA security turned on. The range is just fine and all my network connections seem solid. Have not had a disconnect yet, over the last 5 hours.

The reason I took away one star is the fact on the Wireless Network Monitor V2.1 there seems to be a flaw. When I connect to the network and internet the monitor says it is hooked to the network but unable to find the internet. Obvious by my submission of this review, the internet can be found and used.

All in all a good product that functions just fine in my A45-S121 Toshiba laptop.

  • Avoid WinXP Install Issues and Trouble
I purchased this card for a Dell Latitude laptop and my recent network configuration that included removal of a WAP11 due to failure and my BEFSR81 Router, replacing both with the WRT54GS. I wanted to install it correctly, yet I am not the type to read the instructions.

I removed the Linksys Utility and drivers for my old "B" card and rebooted my machine. I placed the "G" card in the machine and it was immediately recognized. I then enabled the device by installing the drivers from the installation CD. DON'T DO IT THIS WAY!!!

Here's what worked for me: Run the autorun feature from the CD ignoring or cancelling the XP Plug and Play routine upon reboot. Let the Linksys Configuration Utility and drivers get set up from CD. After the prompted reboot, it worked great! My router configuration uses both the WEP encryption, but also a MAC Filter function, allowing only the physical MAC address access to the wireless network. It's secure, signal strength is higher and pages "leap" on to the display (it should be noted that your mileage may vary) dependent on ISP provider or platform....more info
  • Wireless G
Notebook adapter works well. However, I am not getting the range as advertised. My home is 3600 sqft. Having low signal problems in the kitchen. If you are needing more than 50 ft of wireless range I would definitly go with the new wireless N set up....more info
  • The Version 2 Card is Good
The provided software is largely immaterial to the Linux user, only implementing the drivers (in conjunction with ndiswrapper & wpa_supplicant) found in the /Driver/NT/ subdirectory of the supplied CD.

This is a good, full-speed performer for pretty-much any Linux-based laptop/notebook, you'd care to throw at it.

WPA & WEP are fully-supported, and connections are easy to establish and maintain over relatively long distances between the card and AP.

Overall, I am very satified with the operation of this card, and would recommend it for those who have concerns about providing wireless b/g connectivity for Linux-based laptops & notebooks.

I would buy another one, were the need to arise....more info
  • Not compatible with Win XP
This card is not worth it. During install, it kept indicating that it was not compatible or tested with XP and crapped my standard 802.11 G connection as well. not worth the trouble....more info
  • Incompatible with IBM ThinkPads - Support Seriously Lacking
Having used Linksys other products at a Fortune 500 company, I expected a routine installation and immediate success.

The WPC54GS is an enhanced version of the popular WPC54G which we have used with success in a variaty of laptops. Linksys claims a 35% "real world" boost in performance, so out I went and picked up a WRT54GS router and a matching WPC54GS cardbus adapter. (Of course, it looks like the end of the non "GS" versions are near, so might as well go with the latest, right?)

Installation of the WPC54GS is simple and straightfoward under Windows 2000. The included configuration utility is clear and intuitive.

The unit worked the first time it was installed. Defining profiles and setting encryption keys was easy.

We had no problems accessing and getting connected with the Linksys access point, as well as a DLink 614+ and a Symbol Spectrum 24 access points. The connection status shown on the main screen is sometimes inaccurate. The utility sometimes said that there was no connection, when other parts of the same program said a connection had been established.

Problems began to surface, however, as soon as we attempted to remove and reinsert the adapter. The WPC54GS found and associated with the access point, but would net get an IP address. The same thing happened when the Thinkpad was suspended and restored or went into and came out of hibernation. In fact, the only reliable way to connect the adapter was after a reboot.

Requests for help to the Linksys web support link and e-mail support went unanswered. The first level technical support folks were polite but not technical (I've been in the computer business for 20plus years.) Much time was wasted performing scripted steps that had nothing to do with identifying or fixing the problem. After quite a while with the first level phone technician, Linksys suggested I replace the unit. I selected the cross-shipping RMA option and received a replacement in 3 days (not too bad for cross-country with no premium shipping charges.)

The new unit didn't work any better. More hours of additional phone support ending up in fourth level technical support yielded a big surprise: the card does not work because of an "IRQ conflict", something that's all but dead for PC users today.

The card had a conflict with the most basic, built-in hardware in the laptop (IBM Thinkpad T40, but could apply to the 41 and other series as well.) IBM later confirmed that there was no way to alter the settings in the laptop.

Sadly, this information which was readily available to senior Linksys support is not posted on their web site, nor is the incompatibilty mentioned in the product's documentation or packaging. Somehow the information didn't get through to the first three levels of technical support either.

Applying all possible software updates did not help, so I'm afraid it's back to the store with this card.

(A final note: I have to return the new card to Linksys to avoid RMA charges and asked Linksys if they'd pick up the return shipping since the entire problem should have been identified with the first phone call. Alas, it seems that such a courtesy is beyond the powers of the customer service supervisors.)

Overall: WPC54GS could be a good product, but make sure you verify compatability. If you are find yourself needing technical or customer support, return the card immediatly and choose a product from a competitor who take technical support and customer service seriously. If want to try anyway, don't bother with the web/chat support or email, call. ...more info
  • Wouldn't buy it.
I Purchased this card along with the Linksys Access point. The configuration software will not load after installation. The card works only intermittantly. Tech support is useless and responded by telling me to try it in a different computer. So rather than buy an new $1500 laptop to get my $50 card working I dumped it. I was surprised that a company with such a well recognized name could be marketing such a crummy product. ...more info
  • Decent Wireless Adapter, Limited Platform Support
I bought this adapter to use on my laptop, which runs both Windows XP and Fedora Core Linux. I was disappointed to discover that the card is only supported under Windows, requiring special drivers that presumably deliver the SpeedBooster functionality. I was really looking for a 802.11G card and figured "Hmm...SpeedBooster, why not?" Now I wish I had gone with Linksys' standard WPC54G card instead....more info
  • linksys wireless notebook adapter
Very easy to install. Directions were explicit and had no problems. Working fine at this time. Used the free shipping from Amazon. Would not do so again. Took too long- 10 days. Would pay the additional price in the future to have it shipped normally. ...more info
  • First time using wireless
The Linksys WPC54GS Wireless-G card that we ordered was shipped and received quickly. The installation was fairly easy, directions included with card. Since the setup, the card has enable us to receive/send emails using Comcast DSL while visiting family, the wireless network available at a major chain hotel while on business travel, and at home on a secure Verizon wireless network. It is simple to search for an available wireless network, change between the last used service provider and reconnect if the signal gets dropped. Once home again, it recognizes the need for a secure logon and requests the needed connection information. We highly recommend this product....more info
  • Lousy WiFi reception
(This is for the Version 2 adapter. I don't know if subsequent revisions may be improved).

We have several wireless computing devices on our 802.11b/g home network. Of all these devices, this card has (by far) the most reception problems no matter where you place it. I have a Dell laptop for my work and I can put two other cards in it and almost never lose connection. With this card, I seem to drop out every few minutes (which is a shame because my other cards are still only 802.11b and this one supports WPA instead of the weaker WEP). As a result of the drop outs it's all but useless for connecting to my office VPN when I'm working at home, given the hassle of reconnecting to it. A relatively ancient Belkin card I have, on the other hand, locks on to any decent wireless signal. Unfortunately the old Belkin only supports WEP and is only 11 Mbps, but it shows that the drop outs on this Linksys card aren't a result of weak signals.

Maybe subsequent revisions of this card got it right, but when I can't pull in more than about 30% signal strength with consistency and lose connection every few minutes, it's not really anything I can recommend in the revision I own....more info
  • A Great Product
Worked like a charm, easy to install didn't use the provided software because we were replacing a B card....more info
  • Did not connect to the Internet
I got this card for a Sony vaio notebook adapter and our corporate network that uses WEP encryption. I do know if this is a problem with the other Linksys network cards, but while this one would connect to the Access point, it would not connect to the network. I contacted Linksys support which was extremely clueless and the person kept asking another tech for help. I returned the card, and got a dlink card. The dlink wireless network card worked fine....more info

  • Linksys WPC54GS Pc Card 802.11G On Mac Powerbook G4 Ti
I started with the Linksys pre wireless version with 4 port, from Amazon about 4 years ago. Then when I got a Mac PowerBook with airport-B class internal wifi in Late November 2003 (Last PBg4 b4 the new aluminums w/.11G), I ordered a Linksys .11B w/4port and since seeing the one post about the card working in a Mac decided to try the latest GS Combo. The Mac had no problem finding the network. Wifi Setup was a snap) Linksys techs helped get all 3 routers working together, that took 30mins). The new WRT54GS and matching card**** Nice improvement, Video is only a tad slower than cat5e connection. Speed check at optonline hits 5,300(53mbps). Worth the work. You do have to know your Mac though. Airport setup is the key. *Use the WEP-set mac id on router to only accept the listed address the rest is up to you to play with. I highly recommend this setup. You get the best wifi connection a Mac can get for less, especially for pre G models. Linksys use of broadcom chip is the same standard on airport, they are compatible. Airport treats it like internal when inserted. I have had only minor bugs and one crash from not turning airport off b4 powering off the card. As far as G vs. GS price 10-20% dif. Who cares? I wanted SpEED! Besides Amzn px was best (+$30 off with Credit Card deal dropped the px to $109 Flat (no-tax, no Shipping) NOT BAD! So all you preG Mac owners who were hesitating, Get the GS (speedbooster works) 108 never gonna happen, technically impossible... read some reviews. As far as comparison with other brands. Apple certified repair shops sell these because they work. They just don't sell at Amzn prices. So enjoy your Itunes downloads fast from the backyard....more info
  • WPC54G & WPC54GS not compatible w/Window XP
Linksys company has known the problem of these two products. However, they (old and newest ones) have not been fixed. The option 'Disable Window XP Wireless Zero Configuration' of Wireless Network is set ON (without a check mark) as a defaut by the Linksys u-code bug on these products. As a result, the IP address is set ZERO all times when Window XP is ready. For this problem, any of Internet browsers CAN NOT BE RUN due to this ZERO setting while the adapter and its Linksys monitor are up and run with a full speed. The browser can be ONLY run if the Internet users reconfigure their setting every single logon time. This is a bug needs to be fixed! The buyers need to be aware of this problem of these products if they want to buy. ...more info

This card is garbage. I have used Linksys products in the past with good luck. I don't know if this product is too new or what. Would recognize the router but would not connect to the internet. • Linksys Fails
Before buying the Linksys WPC54GS I was a big fan of Linksys networking products. The problems I had with this product have made me look at other brands.

A client of mine needed to equip a Dell laptop with wireless capability so it would work using VPN (Virtual Private Networking). I purchased the Linksys WPC54GS and when I installed it I was surprised that the included CD had the same software version as the Linksys website. I proceeded to install the VPN software. Suddenly the wireless connection began to disconnect, then reconnect, then disconnect, over and over. Perplexed I spent over an hour re-installing drivers, re-installing VPN, and searching knowledge bases. My research showed that other people experienced this same issue.

I packed up the device and brought it back to the dealer. They gave me a full refund. I picked up the Netgear WGT511T, and low and behold it works perfectly! In the future I will look first to Netgear and Belkin before using Linksys products....more info

  • AWESOME
This is awesome. I First bought this product 3 years ago at radio shack and payed over [...] bucks for it. The first week I had it the computer fell on the floor and cracked the card I taped it together and it still worked for 3 years. So when it finaly stoped working I wanted the same thing but was not willing to pay the astronomical amount radio shack wants for it .
I found it here for way less and bought it. Got it home and plugged it in and I was up and running again. The reason I like this one better than the others they have out there is 1) The price on amazon just cant be beat.2) The booster on this thing is great! Tried it with out it and its so SLOW!!!!!!!3)It so easy to install just put in disk and put card in slot on computer and follow instruction so easy!!!

  • Linksys again shines
CD spun up, couple of clicks, this Linksys card inserted into Dell Latitude C610 without mini pci card, followed instructions, couple more clicks, and online. It performs as expected, range is as expected, no disconnects as yet, using Linksys wireless router also, signal diminishes to 20% at times but bytes still get sent and DSL speed remains constant. It works for me, and was easier than I expected...more info
  • Another DON'T bother
Linksys is a poor product. The range from the computer to our laptop changes. You can sit in the same place and have different connections (good, excellent, etc..) We have had to replace our card several times, as it just stopped working and would malfunction. The worst is customer service. My husband spent hours on the phone with the customer support person in India. The gentleman could not understand that our laptop would not connect and kept asking my husband to go online with the laptop, he also kept saying, "We may lose the internet connection", when there was NO internet connection. After 45 minutes the man said, " I hope your problem never gets fixed, I'll now connect you with the best technician in the world." Then he hung up on my husband. The next person was in the Philippines and helped a bit, but we are still not connected and have had to take our laptop to a technician to repair the damage done to our laptop by the first technician who was doing nothing other than reading off a script of problem solving. He created a bridge on our system for our TWO computers. We will be throwing away our Linksys system and buying something that is easier to use and set up and has better customer service. I would never deal with this company or advise anyone to buy a product having to deal with hostile and angry technicians. Having help with any product purchased is very important. After the 3 hours of time spent with several technicians it is clear they are reading off a script and going down the line of problems and don't know what they are doing.
UPDATE: We contacted Linksys in CA (not an easy task) and have recieved several phone calls...one apologizing for the rudeness of the technician and another from a CA tech trying to help us fix our computer. This tech knew what he was talking about and has been helpful. I'm not changing the rating though...they record these sessions, they should make sure their technicians are helpful and not hurtful. ...more info
  • Doesn't Work With Texas Instruments CardBus Controllers

  • reliable brand, poor support
Although I love Linksys routers, this wireless adapter card for notebooks was a nightmare. My gateway pc met all the system requirements, however the adapter required an additional driver update from gateway that was not listed. The adapter froze my computer and I was unable to uninstall the adapter. I spent 4 days (about 1-3 hours per day)with phone tech support unable to solve this problem. They finally did me the "favor" of charging me ten dollars to control my pc remotely, only to ultimately tell me there is nothing they can do and I should return the product. And they never refunded the ten dollars. This product may be in fact great, but be wary of hidden driver updates and terrible tech support. ...more info

  • Great and fast
About 2 weeks ago I bought the WMP54GS for my PC and the WPC54GS for my notebook. The reason why I bought them was because I wanted to play some games against my cousin without the hassle of putting long wires throughout the house. I was not sure if I could get the desired speed between these computers to play the games without freezing or hang-ups. My other problem was that as far as networking goes my knowledge was slim to none. However, when I received these products and installed them in my PC and notebook I had some slight connection problems (probably my fault) but after 2 or 3 hours of struggling I got it to work and I am very , very satisfied with these products. The computers give me an almost constant connection speed of 54Mbps and as far as the gaming goes, there are no hang-ups or freezing. I also recently bought the WRT54GS router , but I haven't connected it yet because I am waiting for ADSL at home. As far as I am concerned ALL these products deserve 5 stars. Keep up the good work LINKSYS....more info
